Poetry Terms

*Alliteration- a repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words.

Analogy- point-by-point  comparison between two things that are like in some respect.

Assonance - a repetition of vowel sounds in non-rhyming words.*Consonance- a repetition of consonant sounds in the words or at the end.*Ballad- a poem that tells a story and meant to sung or recited.*Blank verse- verse with rhyme, which uses iambic pentameter.*Figurative language- the use of words, phrases, symbols, and ideas to to evoke mental images and sense impressions.*Free verse-  poetry that does not contain a regular pattern of rhyme meter.

Haiku-  a  Japanese poem composed of three unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables. Haiku reflects on some aspect of nature.*Imagery- Imagery consits of descriptive words and phrases that re-create sensory experiences of the reader.*Lyric Poem- a short poen in which a single speaker expreses personal thoughts & feelings.

Narrative Poem- Tells a short story or novel, narrative poem has the following elements; characters, setting, plot, point of view and they all combine to develop a theme.*Ode- A lyric poem in the form of an address to a particular subject, often elevated in style or manner and written in varied or irregular meter.

Rhyme- likeness of sounds at the ends of words as in suite, heat & complete.

Rhythm- a strong, regular, repeated pattern of movement or sounds.
*Shakespearean Sonnet- a poem consisting of three quatrains and a concluding couplet in iambic pentameter with the rhyme shceme abab cdcd efef gg.
*Petrarchan Sonnet- a poem consisting of an octave (abbaabba) and a sestet (cdecde or cdcdcd).
